Recreation in Central Oregon
Deschutes River Recreational Activities - Recreational activities along the river are a mixture of placid and quiet or tumultuous and energizing. Some recreation areas include developed campgrounds and favorite rafting and picnicking sites and there are quieter areas without trails and limited road access. Visitors to the area and homeowners as well can canoe, raft, fish or ride mountain bikes. They can also go bird watching, on a picnic, walk the dog or photograph wildlife and flowers.
The Big Deschutes River flows through the following housing developments and home-sites: Sunriver, Deschutes River Recreation homes, River Meadows, River Forest Acres, Oregon Water Wonderland and adjoins The Fall River which flows through Fall River Estate.
The Deschutes River is renowned for its fly fishing. It is home to a unique wild and native strain of rainbow trout known locally as "redsides." The redsides grow larger than most and also have a distinct darker red stripe than most wild rainbow trout. Fly fishermen come from around the world in the last two weeks in May through the first two weeks in June to take advantage of the Stone fly and Salmon Fly hatch. These bugs are in the river year-round, however their large adults are a major food source for the fish.
The Little Deschutes River flows 91 miles from its headwaters in Miller Lake in Klamath County to the Big Deschutes River about 15 miles South of Bend. This River has adjoining home-sites located in Crosswater, Vandevert Ranch, Oregon Water Wonderland, and Lazy River ? connecting near Harper´s Bridge to The Big Deschutes and Spring River which flows through Spring River Estates.
Fall River is a beautiful spring-fed stream flowing through rolling pine forests. It is open to fly fishing only. Clear and cold it springs from the ground about 2 miles northwest of Pringle Falls and winds it way through Fall River Estate and northeast to join the Deschutes River. Fall River is an outstanding contributor of brown trout to the Deschutes River and provides excellent winter habitat for numerous species. It´s pristine water supports a productive hatchery and contributes invaluable water quality to the Deschutes. Legal size brook and rainbow trout, stocked several times a year, merge with the naturally reproducing brook, brown and rainbow trout. Brown trout at 8 pounds have been pulled out of the Fall River but average sizes run in the 8-12 inch range. The Fall River averages 25-50 feet across. National Forest land borders half of Fall River´s 8 miles.

Deschutes River Recreation opportunities include more than the most popular of fishing, canoeing and rafting. There are 14 National Forest Campgrounds in addition to the LaPine State Recreation area.
There are many developed trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Only 20% of the Deschutes River flows through private land so there are many opportunities for enjoyment of the River by all.
Other areas of interest in the vicinity include Benham Falls, Cascade Lakes Highway, Lava Lands, and the High Desert Museum.
